South of Bingham, the Kennebec widens as the landscape
becomes more level and more settled. Larger towns and cities (Skowhegan,
Waterville and Augusta) developed along its banks where industrial
activities during the 19th century were concentrated at the location
of major falls. Augusta is the state capital.
This region offers an array of cultural and historical
attractions. Of special interest is the presence of a large population
of French descendants whose predecessors immigrated from Québec.
Outdoor recreation features bicycling and water sports. Visitor
services are widely available.
