The corridor passes through a forested, mountainous
landscape crossing the height of land between the Chaudière and
Kennebec valleys. The corridor links small settlements in the otherwise
rural and scenic area. This section of Route 201, which runs from
the border south to Solon, has been designated a National Scenic
Byway for its spectacular views.
The Kennebec River, joined at The Forks by the Dead
River, provides what is widely considered to be the best white water
sport opportunity in the northeastern U.S., and the Appalachian
Trail, the nation’s legendary hiking trail, crosses the corridor
at Caratunk. The Forest Highlands region is a great area for outdoor
recreation.
